  1. Identify the full machine type or retail model code, not only the marketing family.
  2. Check the manufacturer's platform specification and hardware maintenance documentation.
  3. Separate the factory configuration from the platform limit. "Offered with 32GB" does not always mean "electrically limited to 32GB."
  4. Match module format, generation, speed, voltage, capacity, rank, and BIOS support before recommending a kit.
  5. For SSDs, verify M.2 length, PCIe generation, keying, available slot, heatsink clearance, and whether the second drive needs a mounting screw or thermal pad.
