Gaming Performance — 1440p Benchmarks

The 18-inch chassis gives the RTX 5080 room to breathe. MSI sustains the full 175W throughout our test sessions, delivering performance on par with the Legion Pro 7i and SCAR 16. The larger screen and PCIe Gen5 SSD are the headline upgrades over 16-inch alternatives at similar prices.

Thermals

The Raider 18's larger chassis handles heat better than 16-inch RTX 5080 machines. GPU peaked at 85°C, CPU at 83°C — not the coolest machine we've tested at 175W but well within spec. Fan noise maxes at 49dB, noticeably quieter than the Legion Pro 7i and SCAR 16. The 18-inch form factor naturally helps here.

The 18-Inch Advantage

The 18-inch 2560×1600 panel at 240Hz gives you 25% more screen real estate than 16-inch machines — genuinely different for gaming, content creation, and productivity multitasking. The IPS panel hits 508 nits with 96% DCI-P3. No OLED option exists on the Raider 18, but the calibrated IPS is accurate for everyday content work. The PCIe Gen5 NVMe is the fastest storage in any laptop we've tested — load times and large file transfers are noticeably snappier than Gen4 drives.

Upgradeability

The Raider 18 is the most upgradeable flagship laptop available. Both RAM slots are accessible (supporting up to 64GB), two M.2 slots for NVMe drives, and a straightforward service panel. If you plan to keep this machine 3+ years and upgrade along the way, the Raider 18 is the only flagship that supports that plan.

Pros
  • 18-inch display — more screen for gaming and work
  • PCIe Gen5 NVMe — fastest storage available
  • Full 175W sustained — no throttling
  • Maximum upgradeability — RAM, dual NVMe
  • Quieter than comparable 16-inch RTX 5080 machines
Cons
  • 3.1kg — committed desk machine only
  • No OLED option
  • Under 1hr gaming battery
  • Same price as Razer Blade 16 but very different proposition
Our Verdict
The MSI Raider 18 HX AI is for the buyer who games at a desk, wants the larger screen experience, and values upgradeability over thinness. At $3,543 — the same as the Razer Blade 16 — you're choosing between OLED + portability (Blade) or screen size + upgradeability + quieter fans (Raider). Both are excellent machines for different users. If the laptop never leaves your desk, the Raider 18 is the smarter long-term buy.
